Having spent the majority of my life in Jakarta, the over populated capital city of Indonesia, I’m always drawn to nature every time I have some free time. Living in Indonesia, we are surrounded by islands with beautiful beaches and mountains. One place that holds a special place in my heart is Derawan, a group of islands at East Kalimantan (East Borneo). It’s one of those places that you secretly keep with you because you don’t want too many tourists with their plastic ruining the area. The moment we stepped foot onto the jetty in Maratua, we were greeted by turtles and crystal clear water. Underwater, we saw sharks, mantas, and a large school of barracuda. And on our final day, we swam with the gentle giant.
