To stay overnight at one of Tenerife’s wild beaches you need to know which one offers platforms or caves to not get surprised by falling rocks while sleeping. We get our information from one of the ship owners in the small port of Puerto de Santiago. For over an hour we talk to Antonio and his wife, a blond lady from Sussex, England. She married the sailor in the 80’s and settled down in Tenerife. The two provided us with lots of adventurous stories and useful information. Traveling is about getting in contact with the inhabitants. We share our story and our map. And they become our one and only lighthouse – in case of emergency. A deep and existential connection.

Tenerife is estimated to be around 30 million years old. In the center of the volcanic island arises Teide, the highest mountain of the spanish territory and world’s third tallest volcano. The natives of Tenerife relied on limited farming, herding, hunting and gathering. Most of them used to live in caves. Early in the morning we are up to scout the canyon before we will continue our trail abroad. From the lighthouse of Teno we will head towards Teno mountain, a vast and paltry landscape through which one small road winds up in soft curves. Our way back to civilization.

Standing here at the edge of the bay. It feels like being connected to an ancient time. Our origins. This deep love for the beauty of land and sea life, the freedom that comes with getting lost there — fearless. You never have to hide or run away, you always find a place to stay and the soft beams of the sun that warm up your body become your constant companion. One day before we were diving through the majestic masses of the ocean, we were up in the mountain, breathing the clear fluid of the air. A waft of mist sneaks over the mountain tops and covers it in white fluffy clouds. We are right in between. For a minute we lose sight. The opening of the clouds is breathtaking. We look down to where we just came from: a bold path lies there and connects mountains to the sea. To experience these elemental powers all together opens up another perspective, reminding us of ancient times when we were living in this world of completeness. When we were still part of those elements.
