Valley of a Thousand Hills

The halcyon days of skateboarding are alive in rural South Africa.

Valley of a Thousand Hills tells the story of the very first generation of young skaters, in the rural and isolated village of Isithumba, in South Africa. In the Kwazulu-Natal region, an hours drive north west from the golden beaches of Durban, the Indigo Skate Camp helped a group of black kids to grow up with a deeper connection with each other and their divided country.

« We are skateboarders because we want to live a life which is good and awesome. »  says one of the kids after travelling to their first skate comp at Germiston Snake Run, just outside Johannesburg. Built by South African pro skater Dallas Oberholzer, Indigo offers skate-for-development programmes around the country. « Alongside skateboarding, the programme teaches self-respect, health and safety, art and music; supports the kids’ formal education and aims to tackle the disconnection of the area’s young people from the rest of the country » explains Huck Magazine, at the initiative of the short-film. Today, 30-40 young Zulu villagers has been taking part in the programme, creating a positive sense of togetherness.
